Chapter 5

I just finished reading chapter five of Don Tapsott's book. This chapter talked about the increasing drop outs of high schools and colleges. It also talked about how there is an increase of college graduates since the baby boomers generation. In this chapter i read about how some schools are falling behind in the fast moving technology world. Some schools in the United States still have the same layout and structure as a school would look like one hundred years ago. Studies show that the biggest cause of why kids drop out is because of boredom. The kids become bored and do not have the desire to want to work hard at school. I would have to agree with this statement. School can be really boring. I have many friends who live in St. Louis and instead of having text books like we have they have their own computer that has all the text books on their and thats how they do their homework too. I feel like many more kids would get their homework done then because they are using a device that they know. Also like in the previous chapter we read, if the student gets stumped and can not think then they can get online and play a game for a little while to regenerate ideas. The last thing i want to talk about that i saw in the reading is that the schools are becoming segregated again. Many schools are known as the "white kid's school" or the "black kid's school". Statistics show that schools in urban areas tend to have more drop outs then the suburb schools.

Tapscott

While reading through this chapter of Don Tapscott's book Growing up digital i began to become angry when i was reading through and it was talking bad about our generation saying we are dumb and lazy and do not know how to do anything. But while i continued to read on i realized that Don did not believe in this. He believes we are one of the smartest generations because we are all adapted to electronics and technologies. He also said that our generation is known as the net gen, which means we are a generation who is a generation that their life is pretty much based on the internet and technologies. Many people believe that our generation is losing our social skills because of texting, Facebook, twitter, and other technologies. I personally believe these things have improved our social life because with texting, Facebook, and twitter you can still remain in contact with old friends that you never get to see. Many people also believe that our generation is to obsessed with the net that we do not play sports or go outside anymore. I believe this might be true because before everyone had a smart phone or even internet people would spend more time outside enjoying the weather and playing sports outside. Many kids now would rather stay inside and play on their xbox then ever go outside and throw a baseball or football around. But in the chapter Don disagrees with what these people have to say.
